Introduction:
 
Red Lead is the most outstanding rust inhibiting pigment. It is a brilliant orange red to brick red powder of high specific gravity. It is a very fine powder of medium radius of 0.25 - 1.0 micron. It is insoluble in cold or hot water and it conglomerates in wet conditions. It does not deteriorate on storage.

It is a useful ingredient for the storage battery, glass and ceramic industry and it occupies an important place in the Paint Industry for its rust inhibiting character.

Uses:
 
  1. Red lead is most suitable for boiler pipeline and water pipe jointing especially for sugar mills in comparison to other grades of red lead.
  2. In the manufacture of positive plate for storage batteries, heat proof glass ceramics, optical glass and fluorescent tubes.
  3. In ready mixed primer paints to be used within 24 hours of mixing.
  4. Surface Coatings: Red lead is most suitable primer for the protection of ferrous
    metal surfaces.
  5. Storage battery: Red lead is used in storage battery mostly in the production of
    positive plates.
  6. Ceramics: In lead glass, glazes and other ceramic material, red lead is widely
    used.
  7. Rubber and Plastics: Red lead acts basically as an activator and vulcanizing agent as well as an inorganic coloring agent for natural and synthetic rubber and plastics
  8. In the assay of silver and gold, red lead is used in very small quantities.
