Grey Oxide

Chemical Composition | Uses | Properties

Introduction:

Lead suboxide or grey oxide is a mixture of 60 to 80 percent lead monoxide and 20 to 40 percent of finely divided metallic lead powder. The free lead content can be varied to suit different requirement of customers. It is a product of great importance in the field of secondary cells. The product which is almost entirely in tetragonal alpha form has been established as superior to Barton Oxide (due to presence of some beta monoxide) because of greater degree of reactivity for storage battery plate manufacturing industry.
Grey Oxide

It is very sensitive to humidity and oxidization and even slight presence of water dropplets turns the grey oxide to dirty yellow colour and reduces the metallic lead content.

Uses:

The main use of Lead Suboxide is in preparation of plates for storage cells. The oxide paste is prepared by mixing suboxide with water and then with sulphuric acid. The particle size of the oxide plays an important role in determining the life and capacity of the battery. Fine oxides produce batteries of short life but high capacity whereas coarser oxides produce longer life but low capacity. The control of moisture is essential in making the paste and storing of oxide.

Properties:

The properties of grey oxide vary with metallic lead content as apparent from the foregoing specification for various grades and the behaviours can be summed up as follows :

  1. With increase in free Lead Acid Absorption decreases.
  2. With increase in free Lead Scott density increases.
  3. With increase in free Lead particle size coarsens and consequently residue on screen increases
