Lead Oxide

Lead oxides are formed by the oxidation of lead in liquid and solid forms. It is a general term which can be either lead monoxide or "litharge" (PbO); lead tetroxide or "red lead" (Pb3O4); or black or "gray" oxide which is a mixture of 70 percent lead monoxide and 30 percent metallic lead. Lead oxides are a family of oxides varying in color (red, yellow and grey/green), in degree of oxidation (PbO, Pb3O4, PbO2).

Some of the main applications for lead oxides in current use:-
 
Grey Oxide is used on an extensive scale for preparation of plates in Lead Acid Batteries which requires production to strict specifications. It is by far the most dominant application for lead oxide. Oxide for battery applications can be further broken down into three major types of battery:
 
  1. SLI (starting, lighting, ignition).
  2. Traction batteries.
  3. Stationary batteries.

Litharge is used primarily electro photographic plates, as well as in ferromagnetic and ferroelectric materials. . Because of its electrical and electronic properties, litharge is also used in capacitors. It found active usage in manufacture of Lead Stabilizers (Lead Steareates), pottery, lead glass, paints, enamels, and inks.

Red Lead (Pb3O4), which is used principally in ferrous metal protective paints. It is one of the oldest and most commonly used anti-corrosion pigments applied to metal surfaces.
